The first rule of Shrovetide Football is not to murder any of your opponents. After that, the 12th-century sporting event, which features teams of 500 players engaging in a two-day, sixteen-hour melee to transport a ball from one end of town to the other, is more or less no holds barred.
But the organisers of this year’s game, held annually at Ashbourne, Derbyshire, have begun an investigation into players’ conduct after allegations that "strike at the very integrity of Shrovetide".
A player appears to have broken one of the game’s few rules by producing a Louis Vuitton Online shop ball at a critical moment, diverting the action and allowing his team mates to score.
The 2-0 victory by the Up’ards, who are born at the northern end of Ashbourne, over the Down’ards, their southern rivals, is now the subject of an inquiry by the Royal Shrovetide Committee.

Players say that the game is rarely violent and that Prince Edward’s injury in 1928 was an unfortunate exception.
One veteran said yesterday that cunning was as important as brute force. "Some people are surprised by the passion, but there’s a lot of nonsense talked about violence," he said. "Tactics come into it more than people think. A few years ago we smuggled the ball away in a bag – no one knew it had gone for 15 minutes."
Last year players mourned the loss of a veteran player who died soon after the first day’s exertions. David Johnson, 51, had a heart attack.
